Graphic Novel, Manga, and Doodle Fiction

Ever since I’ve entered my high school life, my hunger for reading has emerged, big time! There were these romance stories that always get me hooked and the thrillers that make me curious as ever. Yes! those fictional stories that always statisfy my creative imagination and my high standard love for them.

I’ve always dreamt of seeing a story with illustrations so it will be easier for me to visualize the scenes specially if it is more of an action story.  This was the time that I was new and haven’t introduced to anything yet. Fortunately, I’ve known manga from my friends and I actually enjoyed it.

With the help of our lesson in 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World, I have acquired further understanding about the genres of my beloved literary works.

I was actually kind of delighted after seeing that manga was a part of our lesson! Reading such masterpiece is one of my hobbies that’s why. It’s almost the same with graphic novel and doodle fiction! They’re all using illustrations in conveying the story. Pretty awesome right?

There’s more! Manga and grapic novel was really kind of alike in many ways! The only thing that hinders it is that, manga is a term for all comic books and graphic novels that were originally published in Japan. Yes, they’re both in a comic book format.

Doodle fiction on the other hand, isn’t a comic. It only incorporates doodle writing, drawings and handwritten graphics in place of the traditional font. One of its examples include “The diary of a Wimpy Kid” by Jeff Kinney. Kindly check it if you have time! It’s beautifully made!

The three of them are really helpful if you’re one of those who enjoys seeing visuals while understanding a certain story!

The Sun and the Moon

Good day everyone! I’m about to share some fascinating scenarios regarding the old but gold mandayan folktale written by Mabel Cook Cole, The Sun and the Moon. Hope you’ll like them!

The folktale has began by showing the usual family set up. There were the Sun–the husband of Moon and their offsprings which were the star and the powerful gigantic crab. Pretty normal right? They have such weird members of the family though.

Who would have thought that the moon has a quarrelsome husband? Quite pitiful. That being said, Sun has started showing his fiery stroppy side. He once got angry to his son, star, so he shred and scattered him in the sky. Everyone might say, “How come? He’s his child!” A responsible father can’t do that, indeed. Except he’s a Sun.

Moon on the other hand, was frightened of his husband. That’s why she tried her best to run as fast as she can until she has created a large distance. Up until now, the Sun’s still chasing her. What a consistent troublesome husband.

Here’s the worst part for me. Who could forget the gigantic crab that brings havoc not just on the places near him but also to his own mother? He was always furious that he wanted to swallow her! Poor Moon. She has gone through a lot.

Generally, the said folktale has focused on family and responsibility. An astonishing masterpiece, indeed!

Apo on the Wall

As a fan on literature, I’m always mesmerized on how authors make me visualize the the characters and the sceneries they’re in. There are lots of things to be put into account in narrating such literary work, I know.

Recently, I have read Bj Paterno’s poem entitled, “Apo On the Wall” which poked my imaginative mind. There, the persona’s father has suddenly popped! That manly posture, rifle on his grip, and wears uniform that has a color of green! His dark-fierce eyes screams bravery! Represented on the other hand were his hard work and experience through those beautiful calluses.

Despite of his little scary characteristics, a soft lovely father lives. Strictly he does things, but that’s for the best for those he has chosen to protect. Also, I can see how pure his movements and intentions are. The way he acts, it is full of discipline and honor. A great hero of the country and family. Such courageous soldier, indeed.

Sinigang-Short Story

Recently, I have read Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran’s Sinigang Short Story which focuses on the main character’s family issues.

There, a child’s point of view in such matter was revealed! Normally, a young one’s opinion about his or her parents’ decision or situation isn’t considered. Villaceran’s Sinigang short story will be an eye-opener that will tackle about the dillema that the youngsters are experiencing.

One of the problems that the main character experiences regarding her family’s issue is that, the thought that her favorite daddy cheated on her mom is already a huge one. It triggers her mental health which change her way of approaching to her father.

Of course, who would be the most affected with such situation? It will be their child. The story depicts how liza feels pain deep inside her as she remembers every detail regarding her father’s mistake.

Also, I can see where her emotions are coming. I know she didn’t want to hate her half-brother Lem for he was an innocent guy, far from the mistake that has been made.

A daughter’s love for her father was conveyed in the story. No matter how hurtful it was form her, she had still forgiven her father.
